garden design

With rossgardens you get a complete, stress-free garden design package, from early concept beginnings through to the completion of the build. We design for both homes and businesses, and work closely with clients to create exciting and functional outside spaces.

When producing garden designs, the first consideration is the personality, tastes and requirements of the people who will use the space. Understanding a site, its architecture and the surrounding environment then helps to create spaces with a sense of place.

No space is too small or too large. Whether you want window boxes, a small design with planters on a balcony, patio or terrace, or you have a roof garden or more traditional outside space, we can provide creative garden design ideas and solutions for you.

art deco stage set garden

"Ross has done an excellent job for me. My garden was in a very poor state when I bought the house and I wanted a complete change. And that was what I got! Ross and I worked through designs and costings and  am very happy with the end result. Ross and his team worked hard, kept the site clean, and always kept me informed of progress and changes. I would have no hesitation in recommending rossgardens to others." Scott Foster, Saltdean, 2016

urban courtyard makeover

"One of the pleasures of my day is a visit from rossgardens, who have been looking after the garden of my Sussex Square home for the last year.
Ross has transformed a rather dull, unloved space into an absolutely gorgeous light, bright,
flower and plant-filled space
with no requests being too impossible to fulfil."
Clive Mackay, Brighton, 2016

de stijl inspired garden

"rossgardens designed, built and planted my garden.
I was delighted with the design he developed, which perfectly complements my house and interior design. The finished garden is everything I had hoped for.
I can't wait to see how the garden evolves in the future. I found Ross to be polite, considerate and very trustworthy and wouldn't hesitate in recommending rossgardens."

Tony Jewitt, Brighton, 2015

cottage garden in the city

"Ross did a super job with our garden, turning it from a total jungle into a beautiful cottage garden.
He took the time to really understand what we were looking for and came up with a design we were delighted with.

He is hard-working, creative, conscientious and a real pleasure to have around. I'd recommend him to anyone."
Claire Lavia, Hove, 2016

coastal retreat

“Working with rossgardens to redesign my garden in Hove has been very enjoyable.
Throughout the project, Ross has been very careful to find out what I wanted from my garden and reflect this in his plans.
The process of designing, building and planting the new garden was clearly explained and communicated with no unexpected expenses and the work was completed within agreed timescales.”

Sarah Carr, Hove, 2017

small city courtyard

“Without rossgardens my courtyard garden project would never have been realised. Taking a small Victorian walled courtyard in Kemptown and converting it into a tropical enclave, is no mean feat! Ross provided me with much needed advice and guidance, and sourced all the plants. I would thoroughly recommend rossgardens: whether you need regular maintenance, or a complete makeover. Expect a professional, friendly and flexible service.”
Daniel Turner, Kemptown, Brighton, 2017

Quality designs are produced by following simple key stages, which you will be guided through. Working in close collaboration through some or all of a series of stages outlined here, we will guide you through and manage the design process so that it is stress-free for you. A design package with rossgardens will be tailored to your individual needs and budget, whether you require a planting plan for a single bed or a complete design package.

+ A : your free initial consultation

Your garden design starts with a free initial consultation. Simply contact rossgardens and we will arrange to meet at your site for a friendly, informal visit. This will allow us to discuss in depth your requirements and explore the potential of your site. You are then sent a written draft brief with details of the design fees to accept so that work on your design can commence.

+ B : developing your garden design

Once your brief has been developed it’s time for the creative process to begin. rossgardens will produce conceptual ideas for your garden which encompass spatial arrangement, mood, planting and aesthetic considerations. Taking your feedback onboard, conceptual ideas are crystalised into one design proposal, of which you will receive a presentation including coloured, scaled drawings and visualisations to show you the potential for transforming your outside space.

+ C : detail design and selecting a landscape contractor

A landscape contractor is required to build most gardens. For smaller, more straight-forward projects, there may now be sufficient information for a competent landscape contractor to build your garden. You may want rossgardens to build your garden or you may want to to build it yourself. For larger or more complex projects, rossgardens will produce the necessary detailed drawings and documents on materials and construction methods required by reputable landscape contractors to prepare competitive quotes for the construction of the hard landscaping in your garden. Quotes will be obtained, analysed and compared so that you can choose who you want to build your garden.

+ D : your planting design

Your new garden needs a great planting scheme and it’s all about growing the right plants in the right place. Incorporating your personal preferences and feedback, rossgardens will select plants and position them tailored to your design. Plant selection is guided by considerations such as soil type, aspect, screening, size, form, colour, texture, scent, sound, movement and seasonality.

+ E : building your garden

Should a landscape contractor be required to build your garden, once they are selected, rossgardens can make the building experience as simple for you as possible and ensure that your garden is built to a high quality by acting as Contract Administrator and overseeing the process from start to finish.

+ F : planting your garden

Now it’s time to bring your garden to life. Having finalised your planting design, rossgardens will prepare the soil and supply and plant your trees, shrubs, grasses, bulbs and other plants, ready to flourish and for you to enjoy.

+ G : caring for your garden

To keep it looking great, your garden will need looking after. You may like us to produce a written and illustrated garden maintenance manual which will help you to keep it at its best. You may also wish to take advantage of rossgardens’ seasonal after care service, to check on progress and suggest any necessary changes over time. Alternatively, if you would prefer to use the expertise of rossgardens in caring for your garden as it evolves and matures, you can simply choose a care programme tailored especially for your garden, sit back, relax, and enjoy the benefits.
